COMICS

As a young child my favorite activity was drawing. As I got older I began to develop an interest in drawing comic book characters. I drew characters from Marvel and DC Comics as well as I spent a lot of time creating my own. As an older child and young adult, I aspired to be a professional comic book artist. But life has many twists and turns. I spent my early adulthood in the US Army. Then I used the Army College Fund to put myself through art school at the Art Institute of Dallas. I eventually flew to New York and had the interview of my life with then, Editor-In-Chief, Tom DeFalco. This was just two short weeks after legendary comic book artist, Jack "King" Kirby, had passed away. He was the creator of the Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Thor, The Silver Surfer, The New Godz and many more. I was the greatest hour and forty-five minute interview of my life. But I was woefully unprepared, and frankly untrained to be a comic book artist and my portfolio reflected that. So, I spent my storied career as a production artist, a graphic artist/designer and a creative designer. But that dream never died. So now, I aspire to be a novelist by writing a superhero trilogy. From the success of that I want to eventually launch my own comic book company, Newlen Comics. Below are many samples of my comic universe, still under construction. I hope you enjoy.

Original Drawings

This is one of the surviving superhero pictures I drew as a kid. It's not really all that special if I'm being honest. But all of these characters survived, even if their names, powers, aliases and appearances have changed. This was done with pencil and magic markers.

I wanted to take one final moment to communicate something very important about all of this. I do realize the scope of all of this is fairly grandiose, one might say, for one person to take on. So to be clear, at some point, I'll have to have a lot of help to realize the full potential and scope of all of these characters and story ideas. But I plan to start small by authoring a trilogy novel series with hopes of also doing a companion novel as well. From there, I would love to do a few comic titles myself. It's even been suggested that I start small and create some 4-page comics on my own to see how all of that goes before I invest heavily into making comics. This seems to be wise counsel and therefore I may create a few adventures of the 4-page variety and put those out into the world to see how it goes first. Meanwhile, I'm back to writing my trilogy. I also plan on launching a YouTube channel so everyone has the opportunity to follow along on this journey with me. I hope to see some of you there.
